“The Next Level: A Parable of Finding Your Place in Life” (David Gregory)

I’m participating in a book tour this week for The Next Level, by David Gregory (Dinner with a Perfect Stranger).

About the Book

Business degree in hand, Logan enters the immense Universal Systems building and is hired as an organizational analyst – a trouble-shooter. His job: evaluate the company’s five divisions, each on a separate level and each operating on startlingly unique principles. Which set of principles is successful? Why is most of the company’s profit generated by one tiny division? What is real profit, anyway? And who is the enigmatic executive that Logan ends up reporting to?

Logan engages in a life-changing pursuit for The Next Level—a fascinating parable that will help readers answer some of life’s most perplexing, vital questions. Joining Logan in evaluating each level’s approach, readers will be inspired to consider the big picture of their own life from an entirely different perspective – one that holds the key to life’s ultimate purpose. No matter where you are now, get ready to embark on your own passionate pursuit of The Next Level.

My Thoughts

I liked this book. It’s a quick read and at a little over 100 pages, it took me less than two hours. It’s also fast-paced and to the point, which I think it important for books that fall in the “Parable/Fable” category.1

This was a book that I found myself thinking about a few days after I was done, which is always a credit to the author2. There’s a message here, no doubt about it. And regardless of what one thinks of the nuances or execution of that message, the book ends with some important statements on what the pinnacle of following Christ is all about. These weren’t new or earth-shattering statements, but they did speak to a way of life that is mostly ignored by the world, even today. As such, it made me pause to think about what “Level” I’m currently stuck on and what I can do about it.

Food for thought makes for good reading, so pick up a copy of The Next Level and enjoy.

And have a great day.

  1. Patrick Lencioni (The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable) has had similar success by keeping the books short and on point, which I think David does quite well here. []
  2. and, in this case, the message []

I like the “up” button. Clever. And I’d love to hear about how it affected you, if it did. For instance, did you have a sense of what “level” you’re on… and what does that mean… and what are the implications of that?

Oh, don’t mind me. I’m always curious.

LL, since I claim to love transparency, (as per my last post) consider it done. Let me think a bit more over the next few days and I’ll write a post about it. I think it might be a bit much for the comments.

Maybe the statements were earth-shattering after all…
