Write What You See Teaser – July 2008

Wow, I didn’t realize that it’s been a month since the last Write What You See challenge.

But here we are, nearly into August, and it’s time for another round of image-triggered storytelling.

Last month, I was pleased to get a few takers. The submitted stories were all unique, creative and funny.

This month, I hope you’ll consider joining in as well.

Click here for a lengthier description of this bit of fun.

The rules are simple: I post a picture each month, along with some prompt1 to get you started.

All you have to do is write a short, short story, using that photo as inspiration.

Your story can be six words (seriously, it’s been done) or six hundred.

In the next week, post your story on your blog. Next Thursday, I’ll post mine, along with a form you can use to link back to your own story so that we can all read and enjoy one another’s stories.

If you don’t have a blog, you can leave your story in the comment section here, or in the post I’ll put up next week.

Okay, here we go.

This month, at least one character in this story should find themselves in this place. As far as where “this place” is, that’s up to you.

If you prefer not to invent the place in this picture, click here to find out its true location.

One week. Are you in?

Yvette stepped out of the cab, paid the driver in large bills giving him a healthy tip and stood at the end of the driveway. The checkered cab spun it’s tires and kicked up gravel as it sped down the street. She stood for the longest time staring at the expansive house that she called home for 18 years. She used to be able to see it more clearly back then. Of course back then the shrubs were only waist high. Back then was 25 years ago.

She’d wanted to come back long before this but she kept putting it off never certain if the time was right or if she would be welcomed. Where had the time gone? 25 years.

When she received the call the news knocked her to her knees and sucked the air out of her lungs. “He only has a few more days.” That was a few days ago. The time was now, welcome or not.

Hoisting the brown leather bag over her left shoulder she made her way down the long, narrow driveway. As she walked Yvette wondered which one of them would greet her at the door. Greet…that’s a word that conjures up a warm welcome with hugs and pats on the back. She was certain no hugs would be forthcoming. 25 years of not knowing. 25 years of not undertanding. 25 years of not communicating.

YEAH! That’s my mom, writing some fiction! I really enjoyed this, mom! I loved the message in what wasn’t said, and the information withheld in the story left me wanting more. Excellent contribution!
