Smells Like Teen Spirit – August Poetic License

I have to confess that I actually had intended to skip PPL this month. Busy, buried and all that jazz. I hope you’ll forgive, Robin.
But I just couldn’t. PPL is just too much fun.
And this month’s theme was too hard to pass up.
No set form. Theme is Back to School.
I knew from the second I saw the prompt that my poem had to be about music. Most of my memories of high-school are set to music.
Namely, early and mid-90s Alternative. A genre that’s still my favorite. Really, give me STP, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Rage any day. That’s good stuff.
Little did I realize that my poem would consist of fourteen original words, with the balance of the poem provided by shamelessly ripping off the lyrics from seven notable Alternative songs from 92-96.
Ah well, it’s not my best entry, but it will do. For fun, click the links to find the artist and album.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
On Sunday, say a prayer for me, I’m buried by the sound.
On Monday, it’s time I got back, I don’t even know how I got off the track.
On Tuesday, Sunspots have faded, and now I’m doing time.
On Wednesday, where ya going to tomorrow? Where ya going with that mask I found?
On Thursday, while it’s on my mind there’s a girl that fits the crime for a future love dream that I’m still to find.
On Friday, three important rules for breaking up. Don’t put off breaking up when you know you want to. Prolonging the situation only makes it worse.
On Saturday, I stood upon these legs and held my head up high emerged beneath the sun to start a new life.

Brilliantly original, and at first, I thought you meant you made up 14 words; it took me a second to realize exactly what you meant, lol.
Second, I feel old. VERY old. I clicked every link and I don’t know a single one of those songs! Please…in your spare time (ha!) burn a cd for me of your favorite and best artists/songs, and send it to me STAT. It’ll take years off the ol’ girl.
Third, thanks for being an always-supporter of PPL. It’s one of my favorite things to do in the bsphere, in part because of the sincere enthusiasm of a few. I’m grateful.
Hey, I don’t think you’re linked, so I’ll do it for ya since I’m “here”.

I’m with Robin on this – I feel so old! My high school days were set to the sounds of Madonna and Michael Jackson – I’ve never heard any of these lyrics.
But a great poem, nonetheless!

Nicely done. While I’ll admit I didn’t know every song, I did know all the bands. (And I’m pretty sure I’m older than Robin.)
BTW, I hear you’re a fellow Colorado Springs resident. I should buy you coffee sometime.

Robin, There is no way that I could create a single CD that captures the phenomenal music that came out of the alternative scene. How about I load up a 60 GB drive and send that to you?
Herb and Jana, thanks!
Stephen, I certainly am. That would be great! Drop me a line at bsatrom AT gmail DOT com sometime!

I heard of these bands you spoke and the ones in your poem but I never really got into their music
Nice usage of lyrics, I like the Sunday lyrics -say a prayer for me, I’m buried by the sound.

Brandon, Wow! Very, very creative. I really enjoyed this. I don’t know any of the words or bands, but you made very good use of the lyrics used. I can see those things happening. How fitting! Great job.
